A great humorist - On destroying books

A GREAT HUMORIST - ON DESTROYING BOOKS

J.c Squire is a great humorist. He makes people laugh at his own expense. He says that it very difficult to get rid of useless books. He refers to the news in a newspaper. It says that the books presented to the soldiers contained a large number of old and outdated books.
It means that people got a change of disposing of the rubbish. Although it is a public duty to destroy unwanted books, yet it not easy to shun them. They writer narrates his personal experience.

Once the writer lived in as small flat in Chelsea. A large number of useless gathered with him. He wanted to get rid of them. But how? He could not burn them as he had no kitchen range. Finally he decided to throw them into the river. He prepared a big sack and stuffed the books into it. He put it on his shoulder and went down into the street.

It was nearly midnight. There was cold nip in the air. The road was deserted. He had hardly taken a few steps that he saw a policeman flashing his lantern. He was terrified and looked suspicious. He thought that the policeman may suspect that he had swag in his sack. But he recovered himself from terror as he could face the interrogations. He had nothing but books in the sack.

He reached the embankment of the river. He looked down but sprang back to hear the steps of a man. He was a tramp and went away unconcerned. He mustered up his courage and was about to throw the sack. An idea flashed in his mind. What about the splash? He imagined that he would be charged with throwing an illegitimate baby. However, he had to throw the books. Taunting himself with cowardice, he threw the sack into the river. Noting untoward happened.

Coming back home, he was sad. He could imagine the books settling down in the bottom. There were horrible book but some of them were really innocent. He was sorry for them. They did not deserve such a horrible fate.
