Reconnect With Nature - page three

RECONNECT WITH NATURE - PART THREE

We have gradually become disconnected with nature. We have  distanced ourselves from the harmony which existed between our ancestors and nature. Their connection with nature was strong because their survival depended on it; their medicine came from plants, they used the stars to navigate when they travelled and animals were their greatest assets as they helped them cultivate their land in order to grow their food.

In fact everything they did was tied to nature. Though nature is still important to us we have somehow, in recent years, lost that strong connection. We feel that we no longer depend on it. As our cities expand with more and more people moving from rural areas and our exceedingly high consumption patterns that has led to rapid growth of industries to fulfill our growing demands, our connection with nature is further weakened, our direct link is being lost.

Yet we forget that we are as dependent on the natural world today as ever before it still provides us with the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land that grows our food and the raw material we use to run our industries.

We are as dependent on our environment as ever whether we realize it or not. So is there a correlation with rapid destruction of our natural world we see today, to the breakdown of our link with nature. The way we live today has polluted our skies, our rivers and oceans, our trees are cut more than new ones are planted, loss of biodiversity at an alarming rat, erosion of our soil and losing our wetlands.

Climate change is our most pressing issue nowadays. How do we change this and go back to the time when man and nature coexisted and our earth was a good place to be?

This however does not mean that we go back to the life of our cave living forefathers or we all become farmers, but we should try to recognize our dependence on nature and forge a relationship of respect with it. The best ways we can make sure that our natural habitat is protected is by teaching ourselves about nature and enjoy the wilderness. Nature should not be some exotic, faraway places to be watched on National Geographic but rather exist s all around us.
