A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE IS A DANGEROUS THING

"The man who was a HOSPITAL...A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"

Humour is a very wonderful thing. It instructs without hurting. It sugar-coats a serious piece of advice. Therefore, the best humorists make other laugh at their own expense. They do not want to offend anybody. JEROME K. JEROME ridicules medical literature that mislead a common man. He also makes fun of those who are over sensitive about their health.
Once the writer read a liver-pill circular. From the symptoms, he concluded that his liver was out of order. In order to get more information, he went to the BRITISH MUSEUM library. He took a book on common diseases and read it from A to Z.

He was terrified. He found that he was suffering from typhoid, cholera and many other diseases at the same time. The only disease he did not have was housemaid's knee. One cannot help laughing when the writer shows his worry on not having that disease.

He sat and pondered. He thought he was a man who was a hospital. The medical students have no need to walk to the hospital if they had him. All they needed was to walk around him and take their medical diploma.

He carried out a self-examination. He tried to feel his pulse. First he could not find it. Then suddenly it started off. It was beating at the rate of 147 per minute. Then he tried to feel his heart. It had stopped beating. He tried to look at his tongue but could only see the tip.

Now the condition of the writer was miserable. He went to his doctor and told him the whole story. The doctor was his chum. He examined him thoroughly and wrote a prescription.

The writer rushed to a chemist without opening it. The chemist told that he was unable to oblige him because he did not run a store with a hotel. Amazed, the writer read the prescription himself. It proposed good diet and exercise with a piece of advice not to stuff his mind with the things he did not understand. The writer followed the advice and he was all right.
